It’s Friday! The end of the week has finally arrived. To celebrate we are bringing back one of our favorite striking combination drills and adding a new level. The focus of this week’s free drills is combining sword strikes with footwork. This helps develop body mechanics, power, and timing. If you are enjoying these drills please leave a comment or five-star review.
1-6 Pell Drill: Adding Footwork
Today we are combining the 1-6 Pell Drill with footwork from Circle Drill #1 and Circle Drill #2. Notice these drills can be done with a variety of different weapons. The striking pattern is the same 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, and so forth (visit the 1-6 Pell Drill post for the full break down). The footwork is more freestyle. I would highly recommend you stick with the two-stepping methods described in Circle Drill #1 and Circle Drill #2. Shift from right to left, forward and back, as you work through the different strikes. Make sure your body is ailing with the Pell. If you have to twist too far to the right or left your footwork is off. The same if you find yourself overreacting or getting jammed too close. This drill is one of our favorites at Ironside MC because you can work on a ton of different skills from this one base. Don’t try to do them all at once. Pick a specific focus, such as striking when your feet are on the ground, at a time as you go through this drill.
